The World’s Most Popular Second Language

April 18, 2023

English has become the world's common language, just like Latin or Greek were in previous times. By far it is the most spoken second language across the globe, and it is the lingua franca in many areas, particularly for business, technology, and science.

With over 1.452 billion speakers worldwide, English is a crucial tool for international communication. While other languages such as Chinese, Arabic, French, Spanish, and Russian may serve as a lingua franca, English remains the current dominant language in international diplomacy, business, medicine, technology, and aviation.

Non-Native Outnumber Native Speakers

The number of non-native speakers surpasses that of English native speakers, making it a truly global language. Many factors have contributed to the widespread use of English. One key driver was the British Empire's colonial legacy, which spread the language to many countries in every part of the world.

The economic and cultural influence of the United States in the post-World War II era also contributed to the spread of the English language. As a result, countries such as India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the Philippines, which were once colonized by the British, now use English as their official language.

English Speakers Across the Global Village

English has become increasingly important in the world economy, particularly in the areas of international trade and finance. In fact, English is the language of the global financial system. Almost all multinational corporations use English as a common language in their communication and operations worldwide. Discussed below are regions where various degrees of English is prevalent:

English in the Americas – With the Americas combined, there is an estimated 350 million people who speak English. The vast majority of native speakers reside in the U.S. While Canada accounts for 30 million, the remainder are spread across countries in Central and South America.

English in the Caribbean – There are more than a dozen territories in the Caribbean where English is the official language. This is due in part to its popularity for use with the tourist trade. That said, most people within each region speak it as a second or trade language.

English in Europe – Naturally the majority of the United Kingdom are native speakers. The language is used daily in Europe with France’s 25 million, Italy’s 20+ million, and Germany’s 45 million English speakers. Moreover, in the Scandinavian countries, 3 of 4 people speak English.

English in Asia – In Asia, most people speak a native language and English is spoken as a foreign language. India is the country with largest number of people speaking English as a second language. Japanese is the official language of Japan but about a third of the people speak English.

English in the Middle East – The majority of people living in the Middle East speak Arabic in some dialect. English is taught in school systems and universities as a second language or as a business language. In example, about 4 out of 5 people in Israel speak English.

English in Africa – For many of the African nations, English is a designated second language. What might be most surprising is that South Africa with 16 million English speakers is pale by comparison as Nigeria has over 111 million and Uganda around 29 million English speakers.

English in Oceania – Australians overwhelming speak English with about 22 million as their native tongue and 8 million as a second language. Roughly 4 million, which is the majority of residents in New Zealand, are speakers. It is also used daily in New Guinea and other island nations.

English on the Worldwide Web – Advancements in technology and the internet have made English even more significant across the Global Village. The internet favors a common language, and English has emerged as the dominant language in cyberspace.

Despite its popularity, English is not without its flaws. The complexity of the language and differences in pronunciations can create communication barriers. Moreover, the dominance of the language can lead to feelings of cultural imperialism, and some countries may resist the imposition of English. Nonetheless, the importance of English in the world today cannot be overstated.
